The Anton Bruckner University is one of seven Austrian Universities for Music, Drama and Dance, and one of four universities in Linz. 850 students from all parts of the world study here. They are taught by 200 Professors and teaching staff, who are internationally recognised artists, academics and teachers.

The university library of the Anton Bruckner Private University for music, dance and drama is the largest music library in Upper Austria. The inventory runs to over 100,000 items which support and sustain research and teaching at the university. The majority of items are available for borrowing.
With more than 500 events, among them chamber and orchestral concerts, plays, dance and jazz performances and concerts of contemporary music as well as lectures and discussions, the Bruckner University is one of the region's largest organizers and presenters of cultural events.
Professor Bernhardi ist ein Menschenfreund. In seiner Wiener Klinik liegt infolge einer illegalen Abtreibung eine junge Frau im Sterben. Im Fieber euphorisch hält sie sich für gerettet, darum bringt Bernhardi es nicht übers Herz, ihr ihren wahren Zustand zu enthüllen. Als ein Priester zu ihr will, ihr die Sterbesakramente zu spenden, verweigert ihm der Arzt den Eintritt, die junge Frau stirbt ungesalbt.
Der Fall kommt an die Öffentlichkeit, Bernhardi soll sich rechtfertigen. Nun fällt plötzlich ins Gewicht, dass er Jude oder jüdischer Abstammung ist. Seine Widersacher wollen ihn seines Amtes als Spitalsleiter entheben. Bernhardi, der sich gerade noch für unangreifbar hielt, muss zusehen, wie Kollegen, die er selbst engagiert und gefördert hat, beginnen, gegen ihn zu intrigieren. Die Sache kommt bis vor den Unterrichtsminister. Der ist immerhin ein alter Studienfreund Bernhardis und ideologiefrei, also weder national gesinnt, noch liberal oder klerikal. Allerdings hat er einen Drang zur Macht. Wie wird der Minister sich entscheiden? Schnitzler nannte das Stück tatsächlich eine „Komödie“. Seine Aktualität ist weiterhin erschreckend.
