AnTon: USER GUIDE

Within our network, that is, on the PCs of the university or by logging into WLAN „eduroam“, you have direct access to all the E-resources.

Outside the university network you will first of all be directed to the start page of AnTon as a guest.

  • Students and employees of the Bruckner University can now register with their Bruckner-online account, giving them the same access to all free E-resources licensed by the library. We recommend you to log in immediately, so that you can use the entire range available through AnTon.
  • External users can carry out searches with AnTon as a "Guest User", and open those resources which are freely accessible ("Open Access"). In order to be able to open material licensed by the university library, we invite you to carry out your research in the university library itself.

If English is your preferred language, we recommend that you change the language of AnTon by clicking on "Sprache" => English in the upper menu bar.

Searching with AnTon: the start page

On the start page of AnTon you will find a search field which will enable you to search directly for electronic material on a particular theme, composer etc. For a simple search enter your search term(s) in the search field and confirm the action with Enter or by clicking on the button "Search". In a further step you can limit the search according to various criteria on the page with the list of results.

Under the search field you will find four boxes with more detailed information about AnTon, links to individual E-resources from A to Z (Digital Library) and to the library catalogue (as previously for all physically present media), as well as help and tutorials from EBSCO, the provider of the Discovery Service.

Choose the option Advanced Search underneath the search field to make your search more specific in advance and, for example, to search for an author in combination with a keyword. Also in this step you can choose the setting for  a particular search mode (e.g. a Boolean expression AND, OR etc.)

Finding with AnTon: the results page

Your simple or advanced search now takes you to a results page, which can be very extensive. AnTon ranks the search results by means of a range of different factors in order to show you the most relevant hits right at the beginning („relevance ranking“). It would show you, for example, hits which contain your search term in the title above those where the term only appears in the main text.

If you see a link or button under a result, this indicates the quickest route to the electronic resource, if available (full text, sheet music download, audio file etc.).

With a click on the title of the result you arrive at the detailed data record with information about document type, publication date, source and further metadata.

On the right-hand side you will find links to Additional Sources such as MGG Online or Digital Concert Hall, which cannot be browsed directly from AnTon. Sometimes the search term can be taken over directly by clicking on the appropriate buttons. In addition you will find the link to our library catalogue here again.

Limit or expand results (left column):

If you do not find the desired electronic resources among the first hits on the results page, you can yourself adjust the search results or limit the number of hits with the help of the following settings in the left column:

For the results of a simple or advanced search the default setting is the option „Licensed E-resources and Open Access“, which automatically provides you with hits which lead you directly to the electronic resources of the library as well as to relevant freely available resources. We recommend you not to alter this setting.

By clicking on Scholarly (peer reviewed) journals you will be offered only those scholarly texts which have been appraised by experts. This option is primarily of use in the search for high-quality articles in journals and periodicals.

A slide makes it possible to specify the period of time when the resource was published.

A further way of narrowing the search is by the use of so-called facets, which are divided into the following groups:

  • Content Provider (Naxos, Alexander Street Press, JSTOR etc.)
  • Source Type (Music Scores, Audio, eBooks etc.)
  • Subject
  • Title of Publication
  • Publisher
  • Language

With this facility the facets per group with the most hits for your search term appear in the left-hand column of the results page. By clicking on "Show More" you can expand the results to include content providers, source types etc. that do not immediately appear due to the low number of hits.

The expander „Also search within the full text of the article“ is a further default setting. You can deactivate this setting, if required, in order to show only those hits which contain your search term in the title or abstract (and not in the continuous text).

Other things that AnTon can do: the Toolbar

To return to the start page of AnTon, click on NEW SEARCH in the upper menu bar (toolbar).

BROWSE OUR  PUBLICATIONS:  here you can search for titles of E-journals or E-books which are accessible to our library (independent of publisher and provider). With a click on the link under the title you will be forwarded to the page with the full text of the E-journal or E-book. If in addition a search box appears under the title of a journal, this indicates that the journal can be searched directly for specific articles. This publication search also offers the option of searching titles according to categories (e.g. dance or medicine).

LIBRARY: here you will find the direct link to the website of the library with all the important information for our users and other interested parties.

PLEASE NOTE: personal folders (My AnTon) will no longer be available after 15 July 2019!

Settings: you can set your own preferences for searches, e.g. in what detail the results in your hitlist should be shown, or to which E-Mail address AnTon should send your saved results etc. To save your personal preferences you must register beforehand (see above, Mein AnTon).

AnTon is multilingual and also speaks German, Russian, Japanese and many other languages.
